Tubbenden Primary School

Modern Foreign Languages

Intent

Learning another language provides a valuable educational, social and cultural experience for all children. It helps develop communication and literacy skills that lay the foundation for future language learning. Here at Tubbenden, the pupils will have the opportunity to develop linguistic skills, exploring the differences and similarities between their native languages and that of French. Learning another language raises awareness that, in a multi-lingual society, it is a valuable skill to be able to communicate effectively with others. It also introduces an international dimension to pupils learning, giving them insight into their own culture and the culture of others.

Implementation

At Tubbenden, French is delivered by each KS2 year group, broadly following the Rising Stars Scheme of work. ‘As well as being fun and motivating for children, it is a self-contained and easy-to use resource, providing full support for teachers who may or may not be French specialists.’ (Rising Stars) Rising Stars is, for the most part, comprised of 6 units and one unit is covered each half term. The units comprise of 6 lessons of approximately 30 minutes. Lesson 6 allows teachers and children to assess the learning and progression made during each unit. The Rising Stars scheme of work provides tasks which are differentiated by outcome for all children and is fully inclusive due to its interactive, engaging nature. Resources and activities are varied and can be adapted to ensure each child is able to access the task and can learn effectively. Examples of cross-curricular opportunities are available for each Rising Star units.

The delivery of our French lessons is through a mix of class teaching, groups of mixed ability and individual work. Children reflect on their learning through class discussions and self-assessment.

Impact

Measuring the impact of our curriculum is assessed through the following methods:

  • Observing children speaking and listening to French.
  • Marking of written work.
  • Images and videos of children completing speaking and listening activities.
  • Interviewing the pupils about their learning.
  • Learning walks.
  • Subject tracking.

By learning an additional language, it is hoped that children will develop a love of languages and a desire to continue their learning beyond the classroom and in to their future.
